Being that I am from the Midwest and even though I am a city boy i have seen and meet a number of 'farmer boy s'and or men who wore them (does anyone remeber when they were actuall a HOT gay apparrel?) Sometimes it seems that the allure of the look is what makes it sexy! What do you think??

When and where do you like to were your overalls ? and how many do you have ?

I now have 6 pairs of overalls - 2 are for when I have to work in the shop welding steel. I have one pair by Ikeda I were sometimes, another pair is made from black corduroy but are made for women "no pee hole" but the corduroy keep me so warm on cold days. another one are shortalls I like to were to the beach and when out hiking or camping. but my favorite one's I were as often as possible and are by Unionbay with light weight demin. witch are the ones I'm wrering in my photos.

Wearing my shortalls

Typical I wear my shortalls only the beaching. But today was a nice day so I decided to wear them around town as I running earns. I was wear them with a light blue short that had lots of dark blue and white strips printed on it, I started off my earns going for a walk along pipes creek. I walk along the river bank for wilily. and after words I stopped at a gas
station for a soda. no one seamed to care about my shortalls.

Than I whet over to the book store to find some so old drafting or photography books. I do not notice any funny looks from other people there, Just 2 or 3 people did look twice. As I was looking in the photography section a younger lady maybe 23 kept looking at my legs. and as I was in the automotive section looking for a repair book on my jeep XJ a middle-aged man maybe 30 look me up and down with a small smork on his face. The guy at the cash register just rang up my bill with no hint of a any smork.

At Koslkes l has looking for some t-shorts that can go to with my overalls. I notice allot more onlookers. I did glance at myself in the mirrors now a than so see how foolish I looked . And as with the other times I' have been at koskos, they have more closes on sale at 60% % 75% off than at regular prices. How they stay in business is beyond my understanding. The only strange look I got was form the cashier. as I walked to the front door she was watching me for sometime me as I was leave

At the gay night club I'll get to this later

A trip to the auto parts store wearing my shortalls, To buy some gasket remover spray. At the auto parts store there war two older guys only speaking Spanish so I had no idea what they are saying the taller one saw my shortalls and sad something to his friend. Later while I setting on the floor reading the gasket remover label, I notice The shorter friend standing at the end of the display rack watching me. and went back to talk to his taller friend. I win up to the cashier paid for the gasket remover and left for home.

They've been worn by slaves and sharecroppers, railroad engineers, college students, children in sandboxes and, more recently, rap music artists. Overalls have clothed Americans at work and play since the 1700s, becoming a national icon in the process.

On Morning Edition, Neda Ulaby reports on the evolution of overalls -- from low-class work clothes to pop fashion -- as part of NPR's Present at the Creation series.

Their origins are murky, but overalls date back to the 18th century and were first called "slops," according to costume historian Sandra Ros Altman.

At first, they weren't very comfortable and people who wore them were looked down upon, says Nan Enstad, an American history professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "They didn't fit well, they were made of coarse and durable cloth, they were cheap, and they definitely marked the status of the people who wore them," she says. "They were low-status clothing and carried a stigma."

But darts and custom pockets for watches, rulers and pens were added and in a sign of their popularity overalls became among the first mass produced clothing. By the mid-1800s, the colors were standardized -- painters and plasterers wore white overalls, farmers wore blue or brown. Railway workers sported a variety of pinstripes.

"Dirty work called for angled pockets and hardy denim," Ulaby reports. "Carpenters added the hammer loop. Sturdy buckles and vest backs made overalls ideal for industry."

Rosie the Riveter came to symbolize the millions of women who worked in factories during World War II. But the celebration of women dressed in overalls goes back earlier than that. In 1914, The Hazards of Helen silent movie serials featured actress Helen Holmes jumping from a moving car onto a train, while wearing overalls.

But overalls are perhaps best associated with rural America and country music. The Grand Ole Opry often featured overalls-wearing musicians. The cast of television's country variety show Hee Haw had them on as well. Charles Wolfe, who teaches folklore and popular culture at Middle Tennessee State University, finds irony in that. "You have this ludicrous situation where people like Buck Owens and Grandpa Jones and Roy Clark and these major country music stars that have millions of dollars to their name are dressing up in bib overalls," Wolfe says.

Today, some hip hop artists wear them "and make more money than most people can even dream of, which is a great way of getting the last laugh," Enstad says. "So overalls have been redefined by the very people who were either excluded from them like women, or stigmatized by them like working class people."
